ARTICLE XII    HEALTH AND SAFETY

Section 12.1

The Union and the University agree that safe working rules and practices are essential to reduce health and accident hazards on the job. Therefore, the Union and the University undertake to promote full recognition by every employee of his/her responsibility to prevent accidents to him/her and his/her fellow employees. In furtherance of these objectives it is agreed that one employee will be appointed annually as a permanent member of the University Safety Committee to serve for a period of not less than twelve (12) months.

Section 12.2

Employees shall conform to all health and safety rules and attend safety training sessions the University presently has in effect or which may be put into effect from time to time by the University. Such changes in health and safety rules and/or notices of safety training sessions shall be posted and a copy will be sent to the Union office. The University will endeavor to schedule training meetings during normal work hours.

Section 12.3

The University will make provisions to assure the health and safety of the employees and will provide protective devices, clothing, footwear and other equipment to ensure proper protection as determined by the University. Protective footwear shall be issued in accordance with the terms outlined in Appendix B of this Agreement. Employees who are issued such devices shall use or wear them during working hours as required.

Section 12.4

Employees who are injured in connection with their work or who suffer from an occupational connected disease shall receive the benefits prescribed by the Illinois Worker's Compensation Act, provided such injury or disease is deemed compensable.

Section 12.5

The University and the Union support a drug free working environment. The parties agree that they will meet at a labor management conference to define a mutually acceptable screening and testing procedure which will be targeted for implementation during the first year of the Agreement.
